Nutrients | Protein | Day 3
Truth #1 – Protein provides building blocks for our body, in particular our muscles.
Truth #2 – Protein provide us with four calories per gram.
Truth # 3 – Foods from the Meat & Beans Group are sources of protein.
The truth is, nutritionally speaking, protein provides a very efficient solution for hunger. Some of the issues however are that meat sources are typically more expensive and they can take longer to prepare. However, meat (including fish) is not our only protein source. Beans, nuts, peas and seeds are also protein sources. And for vegetarian and vegan diets, there are also other vegetable sources of protein that can be used to supplement the diet. When preparing and eating protein sources it is important to be mindful of portion sizes. Also, go with lean cuts of beef, chicken, turkey and pork. Remember, the ‘Meat & Bean’ Group of the Food Pyramid is the smallest main group. The ‘Oils’ (fats) group is technically not a group, and should be limited in our diets.
When handling and preparing meat, be sure to cook thoroughly (in particular chicken) and keep at proper temperatures, so that you avoid food poisoning.
